Hotel Brosundet, Alesund, Norway

In pretty Alesund, Hotel Brosundet’s heritage as a former warehouse for local fisheries gives guests a sense of place and an insight into local life in Norway.

The hotel is a luxurious and comfortable urban oasis and every stay feels personalised. Each room or suite is individual in style, typical of Norwegian design with traditional wooden features softened but gentle lighting and carefully selected artwork, enjoying views of the Brosundet channel or the town’s Art Nouveau architecture and picturesque cobblestoned streets.

The Loft Suites are perfect for families with plenty of space, two bedrooms with King beds, ensuite bathroom with bathtub and shower, living room with dining and sitting area, sea views, coffee machine, tv, comfy robe and slippers and complimentary Spekenhus products.

For a truly unique experience, 5 minutes from the Hotel guests can stay in the Mojla Lighthouse room, which has been created within a historic lighthouse that has been guiding ships into harbour for over a century and a half. The space is beautifully crafted, very romantic, and offers amazing views. Breakfast is brought to you in a basket each morning.

Whilst there is so much to explore in and around Alesund, Hotel Brosundet offers plenty of exciting experiences for guests during a stay. Saturdays are for Afternoon Tea with a local twist: taking the old tradition of a Tea Dance, the hotel has created a social experience with live music, homemade treats such as cakes, macaroons and scones, local beers and wine, which locals are welcome to join as well as guests. Wendesdays are for After Six, another live music event taking place by the hotel’s fireplace, with great food and wine also on offer. Thursdays are for wine tasting at Apotekergata No. 5, as the hotel’s sommelier brings some special wines out of the cellar to be enjoyed with cold cuts, local cheeses and smoked meats.

Apotekergata No. 5. Restaurant’s Executive Chef, Stig Roar teaches diners about local flavours and culinary traditions. Stig is passionate foraging and celebrates local producers and their high-quality goods. The outdoor seating on the barge is lovely for a warm day.

All rooms enjoy complimentary access to the Sundet Gym & Bath, which offers yoga, sauna and outdoor baths – a spectacular retreat in the heart of the Brosundet canal, with views of tranquil scenes of fishing boats and the mountain tops in the distance above the city skyline. Wild swimming in the canal is a refreshing and restorative experience.

The Sunmore region is an adventurer’s paradise with hiking for all levels, skiing opportunities and breathtaking wild swimming. We can arrange privately guided cruises in the fjords to take in the natural beauty of these surroundings, as well as fishing trips, where you can then enjoy your catch at the hotel restaurant overlooking the canal.

Wildlife Sea Safaris by zodiac are a fantastic way to explore the Nordic open sea, beautiful shores and mountain caves, with a chance of visiting a seal colony and seeing Runde Island, known for its eagles and puffins. Kayaking is also an amazing way to see wildlife upclose along the unspoilt coastline of the nearby fjords.

We recommend taking a walking tour of the city of Ålesund, and for a soft adventure, climbing the 418 steps from the city park to mount Aksla and Fjellestua, with a stunning viewpoint over the town and surrounding mountains, fjords and open sea. The Alesund Devold textile factory, founded in 1853, produced wool garments of the highest quality, with iconic designs worn by world famous adventurers. Now the space is a hub for local culture and creativity, home to a number of boutique shops and restaurants.

Getting the details right, from which hotel is perfectly located for exploring away from the crowds, to which local guide is most knowledgeable on history or culture or art, is of paramount importance to me. I am constantly seeking out new and exciting experiences and exploring off the beaten track to ensure my clients are receiving the best and most honest first-hand advice.
