Helena Bay Lodge enjoys a breathtaking setting on an 800-acre private estate on the coast of North Island, overlooking the South Pacific Ocean.
With 3 Junior suites and 2 Villas, hosting a maximum of 5 couples (or taken over on exclusive-use), Helena Bay feels very private and every stay is tailored entirely to your interests.
The lodge sits on a beautiful stretch of 2 miles of coastline, with 4 private beaches and intimate coves to exploring.
Helena Bay Lodge, a member of Relais & Chateaux, has been completed to a high-spec, styled on the early European architecture in the region. There is a gym, spa with sauna, steam and plunge pool, tennis court, 25m heated pool, library, indoor and outdoor dining spaces, a firepit overlooking the ocean, and an eclectic artwork collected from the owners’ travels.
Each suite provides ample space, comfortable King beds, handmade linens, and ocean-facing balconies/terraces (Leica binoculars are provided for spotting whales and dolphins in the bay).
The Villa suites can interconnect for a party of four, and each has a log-burning fireplace for cooler nights.
Expect spectacular Italian cuisine – ‘estate to plate’ - with a menu curated by Michelin-starred Ristorante Don Alfonso 1890 from Southern Italy. Meals are enjoyed in a variety of beautiful locations, from candlelit terrace dinners by a log fire, to private beach picnics and special tasting menus. The Den is a particularly romantic and intimate dining space with a library, fire and board games.
There are so many activities to enjoy on the estate, which you can explore by foot, horseback, electric mountain bike, or buggy. Learn about the estates land management, native tree projects, and wildlife breeding programmes, and visit the garden goats, donkeys and wagyu cattle. There are also remnants of many former Maori fortifications on the estate and along the coastline. Private picnics can be enjoyed anywhere on the property and you can take out an electric Polaris 4WD Ranger to your favourite spot.
For a heavenly day at the beach, I recommend booking Mohei Pavilion exclusively – it’s a day-house on a beautiful private beach, equipped with a kitchen, bathroom, shower, sun-loungers, shaded deck and kayaks.
From Helena Bay Lodge, explore the wild coastlines of the Bay of Islands and Poor Knights Islands, discover colourful marine life, and make the most of incredible diving opportunities to drop offs, caves, walls and tunnels.
The lodge owns and runs its own 48ft luxury vessel, which is perfect for a half or full day charter for up to 12 people to discover pristine islands and go deep-sea fishing. The boat comes with a qualified crew, bathroom and shower, indoor dining, spacious decks, and snorkelling, kayak and paddle-board equipment.
Every time I explore a new destination, whether it’s on an adventure holiday in Peru or a luxury beach escape in the Indian Ocean, I return home full of excitement to share the amazing sights I have seen. Through my own experiences I have developed a love of helping others experience the great wonders of the world; truly getting under the skin of the extraordinary destinations that are at your fingertips. Getting the details right, from which hotel is perfectly located for exploring away from the crowds, to which local guide is most knowledgeable on history or culture or art, is of paramount importance to me. I am constantly seeking out new and exciting experiences and exploring off the beaten track to ensure my clients are receiving the best and most honest first-hand advice.
