Umzolozolo is a firm favourite for a family safari in South Africa.
Located in Nambiti Private Game Reserve, 2.5hrs from Durban (direct flights from London), the lodge is inexpensive compared with similar lodges in the region and all-inclusive, meaning you don’t have to worry about a thing once you get there. It’s a great place for children to explore with the guidance of attentive staff, malaria-free and you can see pretty much everything within the reserve, including the Big 5.
Umzolozolo feels relaxed and intimate, comprised of 9 freestanding luxury suites made from local materials and thatched roofs.
Rooms vary in size, but all are spacious and air-conditioned, with contemporary furnishings, king/twin bed options for families, picture windows and private decks offering panoramic views over a game-rich valley.
Some rooms also include an outdoor shower for bathing al fresco with a beautiful view. The main lodge is warm and inviting, with a fire in the evenings and a well-stocked bar.
A wide veranda leads out to a stunning infinity pool providing an amazing vantage point over the African bushveld, which proves a popular spot for sundowners.
Dinner is often served under the stars around a roaring log fire.
Whilst there are more wild and adventurous safari destinations to choose from in South Africa, Umzolozolo is great for young families looking to enjoy incredible game viewing and a variety of activities. Guests are greeted by their personal tracker-guide on arrival and enjoy morning and afternoon activities tailored to their own interests.
Breakfast is always a delicious English breakfast to start the day with plenty of energy, and lunch is usually buffet-style, taken by the pool or on your private viewing deck, before a leisurely siesta and a late-afternoon excursion.
Along with classic 4x4 game drives, fishing in the Sundays River and birdwatching (more than 200 species recorded in the reserve), Umzolozolo offers fascinating battlefield tours to visit significant historical sites and nearby fortifications.
Discover the rich history of the region’s various settlers and stories from the Anglo-Zulu and Anglo-Boer wars. For those looking for more activity, the Drakensburg Mountains are 45 minutes away, providing superb hiking terrain, as well as a spectacular golf course (one of the most popular in South Africa). Or for a relaxing afternoon, indulge in a massage or beauty treatment at Tuluna Health Spa (the kids will be kept very happy and entertained in the kids’ club).
Don’t miss! - The cheetah rehabilitation project on the reserve.
Every time I explore a new destination, whether it’s on an adventure holiday in Peru or a luxury beach escape in the Indian Ocean, I return home full of excitement to share the amazing sights I have seen. Through my own experiences I have developed a love of helping others experience the great wonders of the world; truly getting under the skin of the extraordinary destinations that are at your fingertips. Getting the details right, from which hotel is perfectly located for exploring away from the crowds, to which local guide is most knowledgeable on history or culture or art, is of paramount importance to me. I am constantly seeking out new and exciting experiences and exploring off the beaten track to ensure my clients are receiving the best and most honest first-hand advice.
