Country Villa, Nara, Japan

Our secret country villa offers a truly unique experience of rustic-luxury in the Japanese countryside. It is more like a private rural home than a hotel; a renovated classic thatched-roof farmhouse comprised of two private villas. The location is beautiful, surrounded by terraced rice fields and mountains.

Along with hiking, canoeing, birding and massages, enjoy delicious meals cooked in front of you, within the privacy of your villa. This is where all the ninjas used to train in the region, so the history of the surrounding countryside is fascinating. The owner is very much on-hand and will devote a day to hiking through the hills with you, explaining the art of being a ninja, how and where they used to train and what it meant within society. Spend a morning walking the scenic route of the 48 Akame waterfalls along a deep gorge lined with a colourful virgin forest. This is a holy place for Shugendo Mountain Buddhist priests and the falls were the training sites for young practitioners. This experience provides real insight into the spirituality of Japanese culture.

Every time I explore a new destination, whether it’s on an adventure holiday in Peru or a luxury beach escape in the Indian Ocean, I return home full of excitement to share the amazing sights I have seen. Through my own experiences I have developed a love of helping others experience the great wonders of the world; truly getting under the skin of the extraordinary destinations that are at your fingertips. Getting the details right, from which hotel is perfectly located for exploring away from the crowds, to which local guide is most knowledgeable on history or culture or art, is of paramount importance to me. I am constantly seeking out new and exciting experiences and exploring off the beaten track to ensure my clients are receiving the best and most honest first-hand advice.

Take a look at my travel diaries for food for thought on your next trip...
