The Silo’s dazzling concrete and metal structure, bejewelled with geometric glass windows curving outwards, is an architectural delight; its façade beautifully designed by Thomas Heatherwicke. The Silo (a former 1920’s grain silo) is a new 5* hotel located above the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (spectacular – a must visit), enjoying inspiring views over Cape Town and Table Mountain. It is the highest building on the V&A Waterfront, with some of Cape Town’s finest restaurants and shops within easy walking distance and the ferry out to Robben Island only a few minutes away.
A member of the Royal Portfolio hotel group owned by the Biden family, The Silo’s interiors are wonderfully eclectic; furnished in Liz Biden’s distinctive style. The property houses a collection of quirky and stylish feature pieces that give it unique character and fill it with colour. Rooms are all individually appointed, comprised of plush velvet chairs and chaises-longues, Persian rugs, huge beds, cushions and soft throws in bold colours, beautifully detailed headboards and sparkling mirrors and crystal chandeliers aplenty.
All rooms take in harbour views through 5.5-metre ‘pillowed’ windows, many featuring a deep tub placed in front of the window to enjoy a soak with a spectacular view (touch-pad blinds allow you to adjust light and privacy as you please).
With only 28 rooms, service here is personal and professional. For families there are suites with 2 bedrooms and spacious balconies. Or for those wanting to splash out on something particularly spectacular, spring for the Penthouse Suite with incredible balcony views, plenty of space, stunning furniture and contemporary African artwork decorating the walls. The Silo’s rooftop infinity pool is jaw-dropping; with a small bar and loungers for relaxing and enjoying amazing views on top of the world.
Dining is an experience not to be missed. At breakfast, trolleys of culinary delights will be ushered straight over to you, an array of artistically presented freshly squeezed juices, cheese and charcuterie platters, homemade granolas, pastries and yoghurts. Egg dishes are creative and delicious – perfect to set you off on a day of discovery. High-tea is also a highlight and the perfect pick-me-up after a day of sightseeing in Cape Town. Before heading out for dinner, enjoy a sundowner in stylish and buzzing Willaston Bar. The Silo is also perfect for art-lovers and offers direct access to the MOCAA below.
Every time I explore a new destination, whether it’s on an adventure holiday in Peru or a luxury beach escape in the Indian Ocean, I return home full of excitement to share the amazing sights I have seen. Through my own experiences I have developed a love of helping others experience the great wonders of the world; truly getting under the skin of the extraordinary destinations that are at your fingertips. Getting the details right, from which hotel is perfectly located for exploring away from the crowds, to which local guide is most knowledgeable on history or culture or art, is of paramount importance to me. I am constantly seeking out new and exciting experiences and exploring off the beaten track to ensure my clients are receiving the best and most honest first-hand advice.
