Exclusive Alpine Escapes

I believe that nothing in the world can provide as much solace as a trip to the mountains.

That all-encompassing sense of freedom as you gaze out over all that space, with the majestic scenery of these natural phenomena all around, is the most wonderful form of therapy. Then the added thrill of the adventure that mountains provide, as you clip into your skis and whoosh down soft and glistening white powdery slopes in the heart of nature, is utterly exhilarating. All this enhanced by the glorious promise of delicious wholesome food, fine wine and a warming fire waiting for you at the end of a satisfying day embracing the elements - I can think of nothing better. In some of the most gorgeous vantage points in the mountains lie beautiful hideaway hotels promising luxury and exclusivity.

Rosa Alpina Hotel & Spa

Hotel Rosa Alpina, established in 1850, is a beautiful Relais & Chateaux property in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Dolomites, set in the tiny village of San Cassiano in Alta Badia. The hotel’s location is spectacular and as you approach you see extraordinary rock formations all around, with the highest peak, Marmolada Mountain, standing at 3,334m above sea level. The area feels very distinctive from other Alpine hot-spots - as well as Italian, the locals speak Ladino, a language derived from Latin, and The Rosa Alpina has been in the same family, the Pizzinini’s, for over 70 years.

Zermatt

Zermatt

Zermatt is in the German speaking Canton of Valais in Switzerland, at the end of a valley called the Mattertal. At 5310 ft above sea level, it is nestled between the mountains at the foot of the Matterhorn, one of the most famous and highest Swiss peaks. The river Matter Vispa runs through the village, taking its sources from mountain glaciers. To prevent air pollution, no cars are allowed in the town and tiny electric shuttles whizz around instead. If you are a reasonable skier, you can access the Italian resort of Cervinia from Zermatt as well.

It was something I have longed to do for a while, to see Yellowstone National Park. We had come across a good documentary last year, made by the BBC (currently available on Netflix, called Yellowstone: Battle for Life) and were fascinated by the geography, geology, flora and animals which live in the park.
